London Landmarks Half Marathon 2025 · 6 April 2025 ·

Our amazing supporters are running in the prestigious London Landmarks Half Marathon in aid of The Brompton Fountain.

Story

Please see below from my brother and sister in law regarding my nephew, Charlie and the care provided to him by the Brompton hospital. I am running the London Landmarks Half Marathon on behalf of The Brompton Fountainso that they can continue offering care and support to Children, and families throughout the UK.

We are running the London Landmark Half Marathon to raise money for Brompton Fountain to say thank you for caring for our baby son Charlie.

When Charlie was 5 weeks old, he was suddenly and unexpectedly taken very ill and rushed to our local hospital. Charlie's heart was inflamed and had started to fail and in turn, his organs were also failing. We were told that needed to be on life support in the form on an ECMO machine, and that at this stage, it was unlikely that he would survive.

Charlie needed to be moved to a specialist hospital and we were very lucky that Royal Brompton accepted Charlie that day. When we arrived at the Brompton later that day, Charlie was admitted to paediatric intensive care and we were given emergency accommodation two floors above the PICU unit, meaning we could be with Charlie for as much time as possible throughout the day and come down to see him during the night too. The first night was critical but Charlie did not have to go on ECMO and was kept stable by the various teams who worked on him.

During our time in PICU, there was a constant flow of teams who worked to try to diagnose and treat Charlie. He was fast tracked for tests, including MRIs and echos, and seen by consultants and specialists from all areas. In PICU Charlie had 24 hour care and monitoring and during this time we got to know an incredible team of nurses who truly cared for him.

After a few days Charlie was diagnosed with Myocarditis, an inflamation of the heart, which in his case was virally induced. However, now on the right medication, Charlie started to show signs of improvement and just a few days later, he was extubated. As Charlie improved over the next couple of weeks, he was discharged and able to come home. He is still moving in the right direction, thanks to the regular monitoring by our consultant and his team at the Brompton.

The doctors, nurses, play team, psychologists and every single member of staff at Brompton were so kind and caring, whilst doing all they could to save our baby's life. We are beyond grateful to every single one of them and hope that by fundraising we can support their work, as well as other families and children in need of treatment. We know how lucky we are and we hope that our support will mean another child gets access to the care, knowledge, medication and life saving equipment that Charlie had
