Story
I'm running the London Landmarks Half Marathon for Dementia UK for my mum (Yvonne). For anyone supporting a loved one with dementia, then you know just how hard it can be. My mum was diagnosed in 2018 at the young age of just 54. My mum went from being a successful self employed hair dresser to having 24/7 care in a dementia care home. This has been a difficult time for my family and particularly hard on my dad who suffered a stroke as a result of dedicating himself as being the primary carer.
Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia.
It's hard watching someone you love fade away every day. My mum was one of my biggest inspirations and I miss our conversations. It is painful knowing my mum won't get to watch my kids grow up and be the most amazing grandmother I always knew she would be.
I hope we can find a cure or a better way of life for all those living with dementia.
