2 years ago, Andy and I set out to tour the coast of the UK on our motorbikes promoting positive living with disability and sobriety. Unbeknown to many, Andy was receiving monthly treatment in London for Leukaemia. Last year his symptoms worsened and hospital visits became more frequent and riding much less. Despite this, we managed to ride the coast Souh East from Bristol to Scarborough. Andy developed large B cell lymphoma in a September last year, and despite an immensely brave battle he sadly died in Bart’s hospital in April. We spent most of his last months in hospital and the staff at Maggies Cancer care centre were my absolute life line. They enabled me to go in, talk, cry and swear, put my brave face back on and go back into Andy’s hospital room with a positive outlook and a smile on my face. Andy also loved it there when he was well enough to pop in for a coffee and we even managed to dress him up and get him off the ward for his birthday lunch there in December. I now plan to continue our quest in his memory, taking on the next stage alone, to raise money for Maggies Cancer Care. This is no mean feat as Andy really was my wingman and would help me get dressed, get my bike gear on, secure my disabled badge and remember my key! At times he really was my eyes and ears so I really have to step up my focus, concerntration and awareness.
