Story

I'm proud to be a porter at Chelsea and Westminster. I walk thousands of steps every day and I'm honoured to help people and give something back to the hospital which has given me my legs.

I have cerebral palsy, so my brain is rubbish at telling my muscles what to do. I had physio in the hospital from when I was a baby; I've had operations, special boots, even a time in a wheelchair, orthopaedic splints and more physio. I walked independently when I was 3 and a half.

Now I'm 23, and I still have cerebral palsy, obviously. The same team still supports me. But it's the paediatric team, which is stretched and stretched to support people like me. It's awkward, because I'm a grown-up with a job. But there's nowhere else. No-one to check my fragile feet and my sweaty splints and make sure my legs are still the same length and my heels strike the floor properly.

On 28 September, I'm walking West (from Chelsea and Westminster to West Middlesex Hospitals) to raise money for an adult neuro-orthopaedic service. This is a brilliant idea from the physio team. The service will be a pilot, for one year, and if we can prove how important it is we hope it will become permanent. I need it and lots of adults like me need it too.
