Story

I'm proud to be joining Alzheimer’s Research UK in taking on the Great North Run on 13 September 2026!

I'll be running in memory of my brave and beautiful Mam who sadly died suddenly on 9th August 2021 - the day after her 73rd birthday. Never could I ever have imagined, that less than 6 weeks after turning 40 that I'd have to face the rest of my life without my gorgeous Mam.

Maureen always loved to sing and she loved to dance. Firm but fair, the loveliest person you could ever meet. Full of fun and full of love, she was radiant and magnetic and her light and sweet innocence shone through like sunbeams. She had this warm, inspiring energy that could brighten up any room. That's the type of person Maureen always was - very kind, loving, caring and selfless, who loved people. She once said:

"Friends and family, that’s what makes everybody happy."

Just as she'd been all her life, Maureen was known for being happy, and cheerful and didn't complain or moan. She was very proud, with good intentions and was always sincere. All about the good times and positive vibes, she was fiercely protective over the ones she loved, extremely generous, with the biggest heart of gold and so much love to give.

A courageous Leo, Maureen was a warrior with incredible strength and charm. Her contagious passion and zest for life never left her despite her suffering. She was and will continue to be an inspiration to all of her family and friends for living life to the fullest and not letting anything get in her way. Maureen had this selfless way her whole life, putting others first and was always her family and friends' rock. As she was singing along to one of her favourite songs a year before she died she said:

"That's what life is about, being happy and having fun. That's what I love.”

Ohh yes, Maureen was a goodie and the best lady on the planet.

Everything I am, my Mam helped me to be. To the world she was a mother, to me she was the world. I'll never ever stop missing, loving, thinking and talking about my lovely Mam and I'll always do everything I possibly can to keep making her proud.

Thank you for supporting me as I run in memory of Maureen and for a cure!

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity.

Together, we're striving for a cure, and will revolutionise the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia. But we will not stop there. With your support, we will keep going until every person is free from the heartbreak of dementia. We exist for a cure.

Facing Our Biggest Killer

Today in the UK, almost one million people are living with dementia. Not one of them will survive.

Dementia robs us of everything that matters. Our memories. Our connections. Our story. And while breakthrough treatments are finally on the horizon, there are currently no drugs available in the UK that can slow or stop dementia.

It’s scary to think about, but the stark reality is that if nothing changes, more than half of us (1 in 2) will be directly impacted by dementia. Either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or, tragically, both.

Research is our only chance. A cure is the only solution.

• £180 could fund a whole day of groundbreaking research.

• £500 could pay for a brain scan to help scientists track dementia as it progresses.

• £1,000 could help fund vital clinical trials bringing us closer to a cure.

For every £1 donated with Gift Aid, Alzheimer’s Research UK gets an extra 25p from the government at no extra cost to them!
