Children’s Hospices Across Scotland, CHAS, are a charitable organisation that provide care and assistance to young individuals with life limiting conditions. Their range of services are wide and varied, at one of the two hospices in Scotland, at home and also when in hospital. But why are we fundraising for CHAS?
Paul’s foster son has been fortunate to benefit from the services CHAS offer. Brandon is a young man who has enjoyed respite at Rachel House in Kinross for the past 14 years. Unfortunately, the support received from CHAS ended in last May when Brandon turned 21, which is the upper age limit for individuals benefiting from their vital services. Speaking about the memories that CHAS at Rachel House in Kinross have helped create is quite emotional for Paul, and he wanted to do something that would show the gratitude of the family for being a huge part of Brandon’s life.
“Every trip to Rachel House was like going away to see family”, Paul says. “We could be involved in Brandon’s care or completely detached if we wanted. We walked through the entry doors and were immediately welcomed warmly. They didn’t just take time to know Brandon, they also got to know us as a family. From Avril, Holly, Freya, Helen in the care team to Grant, Shona in the catering team and Margaret in the domestic team, we were all welcomed warmly. These are just a few of the amazing team at RH, who made us feel at home, who understood what our family were going through, and who made our short visits so much fun.”
“Brandon’s last visit to Rachel House was in May 2025, the week before his 21st birthday. The staff arranged a farewell tea party where the whole family could come and celebrate. It was home from home, and we felt amazing sadness to depart for the last time on the Monday morning. Nothing was too difficult for the care team, catering staff and the domestic staff. We really miss our trips to Rachel House, but the memories CHAS have helped us create over the years are priceless.”
So, to honour those memories Paul, Geoff, Jamie and Luigi have all taken on the challenge of cycling from London to Paris, approximately 320 miles, in 4 days. No, we will not be cycling through the channel tunnel or getting our feet wet on a pedalo, the ferry from Dover is the chosen mode of transport!
Would you help us to help CHAS? Any amount of money would be much appreciated, but the more we can raise, the better for CHAS to help make great memories for others following in Brandon’s footsteps.
