Story

From Saving Lives to Surviving the Arctic: My 5,000-Mile Journey for the NHS

Three years ago, I became a Community First Responder (CFR) for the NHS—a volunteer role that places medically trained individuals at the front line of emergency care. When someone calls 999, I’m often the first on scene, providing critical interventions before an ambulance arrives.

In those years, I’ve responded to cardiac arrests, respiratory distress, severe trauma, and other life-threatening emergencies. I’ve delivered CPR, administered oxygen, managed bleeding, and supported patients through the most critical moments of their lives. These experiences are intense and humbling, and they remind me every day why the NHS and pre-hospital care are so vital.

But the NHS needs help. Resources are stretched, and the South Western Ambulance Charity plays a vital role in supporting volunteers like me with training and equipment. That’s why, in January 2026, I’m taking on a challenge that’s as extreme as it gets:

5,000 miles across the Arctic Circle.

Snow, ice, and temperatures plunging to -30°C.

And I’ll be doing it in a 40-year-old Land Rover Defender.

This isn’t a holiday. It’s a test of endurance, resilience, and sheer determination. I’ll be driving through some of the harshest conditions on Earth, alongside The Orange Defender team—experts who’ve done this before and bring a wealth of knowledge to keep us safe.

Why? Because I believe in helping people when they need it most. This expedition is completely self-funded—every penny you donate goes directly to the South Western Ambulance Charity. Your support will help provide vital equipment and training for CFRs, so we can keep saving lives in our communities.
