Story

Facing My Biggest Fear… For Something Much Bigger Than Me

At the end of October, my daughters, Jessica, Rebecca and I will be standing on the roof of Anfield Stadium before taking a step over the edge and abseiling down one of football’s most iconic grounds.

For many people, that sounds exciting. For me, it means facing one of my biggest irrational fears… heights. Every instinct will be telling me not to take that first step. But some things are simply bigger than our fears, and this is one of them.

We’re taking on this challenge to support The Children’s Football Alliance (CFA), an incredible charity dedicated to Protecting Childhood Through Play. At a time when so much of the world feels divided by conflict, politics and war, the CFA chooses a different path. It believes that every child deserves the chance to play, to belong and to grow up in an environment where friendship is stronger than fear and understanding is stronger than difference.

At the heart of that mission is the Peace Pitch programme. These aren’t simply football pitches; they’re symbols of hope. Inspired by the extraordinary Christmas Truce of 1914, when soldiers laid down their weapons to play football together in No Man’s Land, Peace Pitches are places where children and young people from different backgrounds, faiths, cultures and communities come together. They play football, create art, share experiences and build friendships that might never otherwise have existed. Each Peace Pitch is twinned with the original Peace Field in Flanders, carrying forward the belief that play has the power to break down barriers where words often cannot.

The impact reaches far beyond the touchlines. Every Peace Pitch becomes a safe space where respect, kindness, teamwork and inclusion are lived rather than simply taught. Children learn that the person on the opposite team isn’t an opponent to fear but another young person with dreams, talents and hopes just like their own. In a world that can too often show the next generation how to divide, the Children’s Football Alliance is showing them how to unite.

That’s why this challenge means so much to us.

Yes, I’ll be battling my own fear as I descend from the top of Anfield, but that’s a temporary discomfort. The work of the Children’s Football Alliance is creating opportunities that can shape young lives for years to come. If facing a few minutes of absolute terror can help even a little towards giving children somewhere to play, laugh, learn and build lasting friendships, then every nervous second will be worth it.

As a lifelong Liverpool supporter, there couldn’t be a more fitting place to take on this challenge. But this isn’t really about football. It’s about hope. It’s about peace. It’s about giving children the chance to discover that the things which bring us together will always be stronger than the things that pull us apart.

If you’re able to support us, no matter how big or small the donation, you’ll be helping the Children’s Football Alliance continue creating Peace Pitches, protecting childhood through play and proving that sometimes the simplest ideas can have the greatest impact.

Thank you so much for reading, for your support and for helping us take one small step over the edge in the hope of creating a better future for children everywhere.

You’ll Never Walk Alone. ❤️
