Story
Hi, I’m Matthew. On 17th August 2025, I’ll be running a 41-mile ultramarathon—solo—from Belfast City Hall to Newry to raise money for Cuan Mhuire, the rehab centre that gave me my life back.
Just over two years ago, I hit rock bottom. After a serious car accident, I wasn’t sure if I’d walk properly again. I was already struggling with alcoholism, and the trauma tipped me deeper into addiction. By 2023, I was homeless—living on the streets, with a broken leg and a broken spirit. I was 26, lost, and afraid to admit I needed help.
Then, on 15th August 2023, Cuan Mhuire in Newry took me in. They didn’t just offer me treatment—they offered me dignity, hope, and a way forward. Today, I’m two years sober, I’ve got a home, a career, and a second chance.
This ultramarathon isn’t just a physical challenge. It’s a message:
No matter how far you’ve fallen—through addiction, injury, depression, or homelessness—you can rise again.
Why This Matters
Alcoholism affects up to 70% of people in Ireland—whether directly, or through family and community. Addiction is a hidden crisis behind much of our homelessness: half of those without a home are also struggling with substance use. And yet, there is a way out.
Cuan Mhuire is that way out.
It was for me—and for thousands of others every year. In fact, 40% of those admitted come straight from the streets.
How You Can Help
I’m aiming to raise £5,000—enough to help at least three people currently homeless to access 12 weeks of residential treatment at Cuan Mhuire. That’s not just a bed. That’s food, support, counselling, community, and a real chance at life.
Every donation—big or small—gets someone closer to that chance.

Thanks for taking the time to read. And if you’re someone struggling right now: hold on. Change is possible. I’m living proof.
