John's "Cuddle Bed" fundraiser for St Kentigern Hospice

John Owen is raising money for St Kentigern Hospice
In memory of Rowena Owen
Here at St Kentigern Hospice we offer specialist palliative care for people with life threatening or life limiting illnesses. We focus on the patient's quality of life by controlling symptoms through a holistic approach taking into account their physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs.

Story

St Kentigern Hospice provide palliative care for people with life limiting illness. Their aim is to enhance the quality of life for their patients and their family.

My wife, Rowena spent 2 weeks in St Kentigern Hospice and the care she received was amazing, but they lacked what is called a “Cuddle Bed” - a hospital bed that can be widened to accommodate 2 people. After a little research I found a company (Montcalm) that had stock of a trial “Cuddle Bed” and one of their employees, Craig, very kindly offered and delivered a bed, driving it from Oxford on the Saturday before Christmas.

Being able to spend the night cuddled up to Rowena and holding her hand meant the world to us. It was also a big comfort to us both that I was able to spend every hour of our last 12 days together - a very precious time.

It is not just at night when it is great. During the day, family and friends were also able to get closer to her, hold her hand and give her a gentle cuddle while being comfortable themselves; something almost impossible in a single bed or in a chair near the bed.

All the staff were very impressed with the bed and how it helped to keep Rowena comfortable and calm.

St Kentigern have raised some money to buy a trial bed which I hope they will do very soon, but they could do with another one as they are 12 bed unit. I would love to help other people enjoy the experience we did.

Please help me raise the £15k need to buy a second one.
