Story

Thank you for helping us fund raise to keep CWA Musselburgh on the road, literally, for the next decade!

Cycling Without Age Musselburgh is a local organisation which offers free trishaw rides to the community and is operated entirely by volunteers. We are aiming to raise £22,000 and have our two new trishaws on the road by May 2027.

We know this is an ambitious amount but we are 100% committed to securing the funds and keeping Cycling Without Age Musselburgh firmly on the map!!!

We are fundraising, applying for grants and seeking funding opportunities to make this happen!

8 years young!

On 1st May 2018 CWA Musselburgh took its first passenger out on a trishaw ride. This was the beginning of something special! The volunteer group grew, and we added another standard trishaw and a wheelchair transporter to the fleet.

CWA enables people who are less mobile, have physical challenges, additional support needs, are living in isolation or just want some company to get out and enjoy fresh air, nature, being with others, sharing stories, having a giggle or sitting in a comfortable silence while being on a bike. There is no better feeling than feeling ‘the wind in your hair!’ Don’t you agree?

Why now?

Our standard trishaws are called Bertie and Bessie and our wheelchair bike is Bobby! Bertie and Bessie are now 8 years old and combined they have completed over 11,000km. Their batteries are not holding the same amount of charge and the bikes themselves require more frequent repairs to keep them on the road.

The motor system on both of our standard trishaws is now obsolete and moving to the latest model will provide more powerful brakes, an update-to-date motor and battery system which, alongside improvements to the overall design and strength of the bike, will provide more power, better comfort and improved ride experience for both the passengers and Pilot. It will also mean that the bikes are essentially future-proofed for the next 10+ years.

Community

CWA Musselburgh has the community at its heart! Our passengers are from residential homes, assisted living units, organisations supporting people with additional needs, dementia groups and members of the public. Anyone can book a ride with no reasons needed or asked. We are completely inclusive and the only stipulation is that the passengers using the standard trishaw can get on and off themselves or with the help of a carer/family member. We have over 3000 followers on Facebook/Instagram. We keep the community engaged and up-to-date via our social media posts.

Rides

Our rides are approx 1 hour in duration and we have 3 routes around Musselburgh – the Promenade/Big Mussel, the Grove and the Lagoons/Seawall. We average around 280 rides per year and we offer rides all year round. Here are some stats on our rides over the last four years.

Volunteers aka Pilots

We have 25 friendly, reliable and caring Pilots who give their time for free and ensure passengers are well looked after, comfortable and safe!
