Story
Alder Hey is full of brilliant people doing brilliant things.
After complaining of leg/buttock pain for months last year, our son Rylee was diagnosed with a tumour on his spinal cord.
As this was a very rare condition in children, we were told he needed to go to Alder Hey Children's Hospital for specialist care. The following 20 hours (until we arrived) were awful, not knowing what could be done.
From the moment we arrived we were looked after by the great staff at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. Rylee was given his own room, we as parents were able to stay with him and we were given a place to stay in Mcdonald House.
Rylee was successfully operated on within 2 days and recuperated in the hospital the following week. He's made a full recovery and is still being looked after by the team and will continue to go back for follow-up MRI's for the next few years.
Even walking through the doors at Alder Hey, you can see what a special place it is. But you can also see that it's very much needed. Our world fell apart for a brief period of time and we were looked after by all the staff at Alder Hey. From receptionists to cleaners, nurses to neurosurgeons. We'll be forever grateful.
This summer I'm going to cycle from the water at Cardiff Bay to Newry Beach in Holyhead. On the route I'll be stopping off to climb the highest mountains in South, Mid and North Wales. (Pen y Fan, Cadair Idris and Snowdon). Rylee himself, along with other family will be aiming to climb Snowdon on the final leg. All the money raised will be going to Alder Hey Children's Hospital.
