Story
We're complete amateur cyclists, journeying from London to reach our Oma in Munich, southern Germany, to raise money for Palestine Children's Relief Fund. This is why:
My Oma (grandma), called Ursula, was born during WWII in 1943. Her family lived in eastern Germany, present-day Poland. As the Russian forces drew closer, she was forced to flee her home and walk on foot to Bavaria in southern Germany. The extreme nature of this journey took her brother's life. Her remaining family members - mother and sister - were left to rebuild their lives as refugees.
Ursula is now 82, living in a care home in Munich. She has dementia, which is worsening quickly. One of the few things she can still recollect is the cycling tours she used to do across Germany and the joy they brought her. This gave my brother and I an idea: what if we cycled to see her on our next visit? My Oma was always very politically active and particularly sensitive to the suffering of refugees. We knew we had to use this opportunity to try and raise money while we attempted this slightly crazy idea.
We've chosen to raise money for Palestine Children's Relief Fund, who are on the ground providing urgent medical aid, food, and life-saving treatment to Palestinians in Gaza. In particular, we plan to donate to their Refugee Food Aid fundraiser, which is providing food for children in refugee camps in Gaza and Lebanon.
We have all seen the footage of the horrific injuries, dismemberments and now strategic death-traps from 'aid sites' which are massacring Palestinians. It is estimated that over 1/3 of Palestinian deaths have been children. Currently, the entire population of Gaza is at risk of severe food insecurity. Aid is critical.
Our cycle tour will be roughly 1300km over 16 days. We plan to go from London to Dover, take the ferry to Calais, then work our way through France, Belgium and Germany, to end at my Oma's care home. We have no experience doing long-distance cycle tours: we are wonderfully ignorant of what this journey will entail, but we are ready to learn as we go!
We so appreciate any money you can donate. Your donations will fuel our cycling and help provide critical food aid to Palestinian refugees. If you wanted to sponsor us 1p/km this would be £13; 3p/km would be £39, 5p/km £65; 10p/km, £130, etc..
With much love,
B & Joschka x
