Story
I aim to walk 280 miles - roughly 9.3 miles a day - between 1st September & the beginning of October, which will be the first anniversary of Alice's passing.
The distance of 280 miles is significant as this is the distance from Fionnphort, Mull to Queen Elizabeth University (Southern General) Hospital, Glasgow and back: the journey that Alice had to do, and the journey that anyone else diagnosed with blood cancer on the Ross of Mull will have to undertake just for a consultation. This is due to the withdrawal of the Haematology Consultant from Oban Hospital in 2023 which - despite an appeal to Scottish Ministers - has yet to be re-instated.
Alice was a dear friend of mine and a much loved member of our small community taken far too soon. She is sorely missed by many people near and far, and the light she brought to our lives shines on in our hearts. This walk serves to keep her memory alive, to raise money for Blood Cancer UK and to bring awareness to the lack of services available to people suffering with this illness on the West Coast of Scotland.
