Story
This September, I’m running my first half marathon, the Great North Run, and I’m doing it to raise money for for the Alzheimer’s Society, in memory of my mum.
My Mum was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s 12 years ago, aged just 51. I was just a teenager when everything started to change, slowly at first, then more obviously. Watching dementia take hold of someone you love so young is heartbreaking. Dementia isn’t just memory loss — it’s losing parts of them, piece by piece.
Memory loss isn’t just a normal part of getting old, everyone deserves to grow old with their memories in tact, and everyone should be able to. It robs sufferers of a normal life, and changes everything for those around them.
This is something I’ve not always found easy to talk about, but running this race is a way to make a positive change, raising awareness and helping to fund the amazing work Alzheimer’s Society can do for families like mine. Alzheimer’s Society supports those affected by dementia from day one, whilst funding ground breaking research, and campaigning for change.
What can your donation do?
£15 provides a call with a trained dementia Adviser, offering someone the support they need right now.
£30 helps to fund vital research projects to improve the lives of those with dementia.
£60 pays for a dementia Adviser to provide practical and emotional support for half a day.
I’ve never run this far before, but I’m slowly building up my training and I’m determined to get there. You can check in on my progress leading up to it on Strava - what a way to see out my 20’s!
If you’re able to support me — whether with a donation, by sharing this page, or just by cheering me on — I’d be really grateful.
Thank you 💙
