Story

For more than six years now I've been working at Prior's Court, a charity which provides education and residential care for autistic young people with severe learning disabilities and complex needs. Every day I am in awe of how our young people overcome the challenges they face and how the staff members at Prior's Court make amazing things happen. I'm the Marketing & Communications Manager at Prior's Court and it's my job to make sure these successes, and how they happen, are celebrated and why they are important.
Now I want to do something a bit extra to give back. Having a small child means I don't get the time to exercise as much as I want so the Thames Path Hiking Trail - 21km on Sunday, 26 October seemed like an event that was both a challenge but also achievable for me. But, to put into context, I am no walker - a couple of laps around our Woods on-site is enough for me usually! Not 21km along the Thames starting and finishing at Windsor (where I used to work as a reporter, incidentally).
I'm looking to raise £500 for our Big Little Things appeal. Young people at Prior's Court need specialist equipment to be empowered to live a fulfilling and enjoyable life. However, local authority funding for their placements here does not always stretch to cover this equipment.
We know that the little things are actually the big things for an autistic young people with complex needs. This is why our autism expert Care and Education teams have compiled a list of relatively small expense items we need that will have a huge benefit to the young people at Prior's Court.
These items help aid anxieties, provide sensory benefits and help to regulate.
Overall, they will make a young person's day that bit more manageable and support the learning of skills that young people can use throughout their life.
