Why We're Supporting Abigail’s Footsteps

1 in 4 pregnancies ends in loss. Despite how common this is, baby loss remains surrounded by silence, misunderstanding, and stigma. Too many families grieve in isolation, unsure where to turn for help, and struggling with both emotional and physical trauma.

Our journey into loss began with hope — the hope of building a family, the joy of a positive pregnancy test after years of uncertainty, and the cautious excitement that comes with imagining a future with your baby. But hope can be fragile. We experienced the trauma of losing a much-wanted pregnancy just before the second trimester — a grief that is hard to describe and impossible to forget.

The emotional devastation was compounded by the physical toll and the lack of adequate support in the aftermath. We found ourselves navigating a system that often fails to recognise or respond to baby loss with the care and urgency it demands. Like many, we discovered just how isolating and overlooked this experience can be.

That’s where Abigail’s Footsteps came in. When others turned us away, this small but powerful charity offered compassion, counselling, and practical help. Their work goes far beyond individual support — they fund specialist bereavement training for healthcare professionals, provide midwives with tools to care for grieving families, and donate cooling cots to hospitals so that parents can spend precious time with their baby after loss.

They gave us a safe place to grieve, and the beginning of healing.

Now, they hope to reach even more families — including those facing the unique and terrifying experience of pregnancy after loss.

By supporting Dan’s Half Ironman challenge, you're not just donating to a good cause — you're breaking the silence around baby loss and helping to build a world where families like ours are met with empathy, expertise, and real support.

Please consider donating if you’re able. Every contribution helps Abigail’s Footsteps to continue their extraordinary work.

In memory of all the babies who never got to grow up — including our own, who we named Artemis after the goddess, wild and free, always watching over us.

Since 2010, Abigail's Footsteps have worked to improve the way bereaved parents are cared for by hospitals and to better educate midwives on how to care for grieving parents.

Abigail's Footsteps also help by creating sympathetic space for parents in hospitals, to providing much needed equipment for parents to spend longer with their babies whilst also offering specialist baby loss counselling sessions.

Please help us raise vital funds so we can continue to support bereaved families.

Thank you.
