Story
Inflammatory Neuropathies UK helps people understand and manage both acute and chronic variants of GBS, CIDP and MMN.
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a condition I have personally been affected by. Despite presenting with the classic symptoms, we were told it couldn’t be GBS. It began with weakness in my legs before progressing to a total loss of strength. An initial trip to hospital and a GP appointment saw me sent away with “just a cold”, before I later spent seven days in hospital across three different hospitals.
GBS is rare, but when it does occur it can escalate rapidly. In some cases it leads to full paralysis, breathing support, and months — even years — of recovery. Outcomes vary significantly, and early recognition and treatment can make a critical difference. In my experience, there was far too much delay and misunderstanding in the diagnostic process.
I’m raising money to increase awareness, improve understanding, and support the work being done so that symptoms are recognised sooner and fewer people face unnecessary delays in diagnosis.
