Please see below one of the reasons we have chosen this charity -
On 21st August 2025, I noticed a white bobbing substance in my son Finn's left pupil, after a couple of days in Worcester hospital we were referred to Birmingham Children's Hospital. Finn's referral was picked up in a matter of days and he was called in for an eye examination under general anesthetic. He was super brave but unfortunately that same day he was diagnosed with Cancer, Retinoblastoma in his left eye on 27th August 2025. The only way to ensure Finn's life could be saved was for him to have Enuculation (surgical removal of the eye).
He was booked in for an urgent MRI on 2nd September to check the cancer hadn't spread and if it would be safe to operate, the MRI results came back the following day and Finn was booked in for surgery for 4th September.
Finn successfully had his surgery and recovered like a superstar, we later had news that he didn't require chemotherapy so we are hopeful all of the cancer cells have been removed but we can't say he's in the all clear until 2 years post surgery.
Finn is under regular review and monitoring.
He is absolutely smashing adapting to having an artificial eye, we are learning how to care for the artificial eye, removing it and cleaning it.
We also learned in October that this is unlikely to be genetic, however Finn could pass the condition on if he chooses to have children, and they would be tested and monitored.
So although the worst part is over this will impact his life.
Next steps we are waiting for photographs to be taken of his healthy eye, so he can have an artificial eye hand painted to look like his healthy eye.
We are thankful to Birmingham Children's Hospital for their fast action and care they have given Finn - saving his life!
We want to support by giving something back so the hospital can continue to support children like Finn.
