Story

I'm running the Oysho Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise money for Refuge.

Refuge does incredible work supporting women and children experiencing domestic abuse, helping them find safety, rebuild their lives, and regain their independence. The charity provides specialist services and operates the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, offering life-changing support to thousands of people when they need it most.

Knowing what Refuge does is a huge motivation for me throughout training. During many of my longer runs, I find myself thinking about the women and children the charity supports. While I'm choosing to run as a personal challenge, many people are forced to run from situations of abuse and danger in search of safety. The thought of helping even a little through fundraising helps keep me going when the miles start to get tough.

As for the running itself, this half marathon is a pretty big step for me. Over the last four years I've started Couch to 5K (or some variation of it) at least ten times. Running has been an ongoing cycle of stopping, starting again, and convincing myself that this time I'd stick with it.

Until recently, I'd never raced further than 5K and, if I'm honest, I never really raced those either. Now I'm training for my first half marathon, aiming for a sub-2-hour finish, and I've recently completed my longest ever run of 16km.

I originally signed up because I wanted a challenge that wasn't quite as intimidating as a marathon. In a twist that is so me, I've since accidentally signed myself up for the London Marathon as well, so this race is now doubling up as valuable long distance racing experience.

One of the most rewarding parts of training has been seeing the progress. Distances that once seemed impossible are becoming achievable, and paces that used to feel flat out are gradually becoming comfortable. It's proof that persistence can get you surprisingly far, even if it takes ten attempts at Couch to 5K to get there.

Fun fact: I've never done the same Parkrun twice.

If you're able to donate, I'd be hugely grateful. Every contribution helps Refuge continue its vital work supporting women and children to live safely and independently, and will give me an extra boost as I take on my biggest running challenge yet.

Thank you for your support.
