Danielle Davies is raising money for Myaware - Fighting Myasthenia Together

300 Miles in May

We support people with myasthenia and their families, increase public and medical awareness of the condition and raise funds for research and support staff. Our aim is to make life easier for people with myasthenia and their families by providing information, advice and support.

Story

Last year I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Myasthenia Gravis. It is a rare neuromuscular disease which disrupts signals between nerves and muscles. Symptoms began with drooping in my eyes, which later spread to other facial muscles impacting my ability to chew and swallow.

I have been taking medication to suppress symptoms, alongside having a thymectomy surgery last December where a tumour was discovered on my thymus gland. This has now been removed and may hopefully play a role in the reduction of symptoms long term.

Earlier this year I received an immunosuppressant drug infusion with the hope it will help control symptoms, and I'm in the process of slowly reducing steroids, which I've been taking since last summer.

The past year has been really challenging with some very low moments. There is no cure for this condition, and it is something that will be with me forever. However, right now I feel almost 'normal’ with my symptoms mostly controlled. I am extremely grateful to remain active, present for my children and able to embrace life, having recently celebrated a milestone birthday - because health is wealth and we must celebrate where we can!

In the spirit of feeling physically able after a tough year, I am embarking on a '300 Miles in May' challenge - where I aim to walk on average 10 miles a day in order to hit my 300 mile goal across the month.

I am fundraising for myaware, a charity dedicated to providing support, increasing awareness and funding research into Myasthenia Gravis. They rely on donations to support individuals who are struggling with day-to-day life as this condition can be hugely debilitating.

If you are able to sponsor me to help support them, I would be so grateful.
