Back Up services include mentoring, wheelchair skills training and activity courses as well as support in getting back to work or school after an injury. We provide peer led tailored support to help people adjust to a spinal cord injury and inspire independence and confidence for a positive future.

Story

100 miles a day for 3 consecutive days, but with your arms? Sounds quite hard. Supporting an excellent cause like Back Up? Now that's easy!

The team at Stewarts Law, who helped me through a long and arduous legal process, are teaming up to raise some funds for Back Up by cycling from London to Paris over 3 days in late September. When offered the chance to participate, I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

I have never cycled 100 miles with my arms before. I didn't even do it that many times with my legs. So, you might ask, what makes me think I can do it (let alone 3 times back to back) with my arms? Great question. No, I don't know either. It's not just the physical feat of turning the cranks for that many miles, but also making sure you don't inadvertently get a pressure sore from being in the bike for so long.

Over the next two months I'll try and take you with me on some of my preparation, show you the kit I'm using, how I prepare and fuel, and share a bit of the experience.

Who are Back Up, though? Back Up is a charity who support people affected by a spinal cord injury. The spinal cord is pretty important for, well, pretty much everything as it turns out. I should know, I'm a doctor. But so niche is spinal injury, that most doctors are not that experienced or knowledgable about managing its many complications.

Paralysis is what's commonly seen (and maybe even understood by some), but that's the "easy" bit. It's all of the other stuff - the bowel/bladder incontinence, the recurrent urinary infections, the pressure sores, the poor blood pressure control, the muscle atrophy and osteoporosis, the social stigma and isolation, the exclusion of disabled people from society that seems to be built into an inaccessible world - that's the difficult bit! Back Up helps individuals to get back up after such a devastating injury and overcome these huge challenges, and if you ask me it's a fantastic cause to contribute to.

So, if that sounds worthwhile, please do donate, comment, ask questions, raise awareness - I'll do my best to share pictures, videos and updates along the way, and make a video series of the big event itself.

There, I've said it now, so I have to do it. See you on the other side.
