I have "willingly" accepted the opportunity of doing something mad now that I'm 50 (ish)… so in the spirit of total madness, I’ve signed up to flog myself in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland!

For this one, I’ll be joining the Ziggurat – Tour de Suisse, a construction industry ride involving around 80 cyclists covering 320 miles and climbing 14,000 feet through the Swiss Jura MOUNTAINS in 3.5 days! Those of you who know me well know I’m not exactly built for either road cycling or going up mountains — but the downhill part of cycling should be OK (if my brakes don't burn out)!

Training commenced in March and I am hopeful of losing the equivalent of your holiday checked baggage allowance and hand luggage before the ride or else I will need to consult with my BUPA documents very carefully!

Ultimately though, the real reason I'm putting myself through this is to raise funds for Action Medical Research. The majority of us, without even realising it, have benefitted from the great work they have achieved. With many successes over the past 70 years including research into the polio vaccine, developing ultrasound technology and testing of the rubella vaccine, the charity now focuses on the prevention of still births, premature birth and the health of babies, children and young people. Join their continued fight for little lives.
