Walking 10 Miles Blindfolded: Stepping into the Shoes of Those We Support
On June 21st, 2026, we will be taking part in MyVision’s Walk Oxford. But I’m adding a significant twist: I’ll be walking the entire 10-mile route blindfolded.
Why am I doing this?
Many of you know that I work closely with my husband, Andreas. Not only is he my husband, but he is also blind, and I have the privilege of working alongside him as his support worker for MyVision Oxfordshire.
Together, we see the daily reality of sight loss. Whether we are meeting clients in the Resource Centre in Oxford or visiting housebound residents in their own homes, we see the challenges people face. But more importantly, we see the triumph.
We see how the right accessible technology, the perfect piece of equipment, or simply a supportive conversation can restore a person's independence and freedom. It transforms lives, and it’s a mission I am deeply passionate about.
The Challenge (The Big Swap!)
Usually, I am the one guiding Andreas. I am his eyes as we navigate the world together. This time, the roles are changing. Andreas will be guided by someone else, and I will be the one relying on others as I navigate 10 miles of Oxford in total darkness.
I want to experience—even for just a few hours—a fraction of what our clients and my husband live with every day. It’s going to be physically and mentally exhausting, but it’s for a cause that means everything to us.
Where your money goes
MyVision Oxfordshire provides a lifeline for local residents living with visual impairments. Your donations help fund vital services such as:
Social & Walking Groups: Preventing isolation and building community.
Befriending: Providing a friendly ear for those who need it most.
Technology & Equipment Advice: Giving people the tools to live independently.
How you can help
Andreas and I are aiming to raise as much as possible to ensure MyVision can continue this incredible work. Every pound counts—whether it’s the cost of a coffee or a larger contribution, your support will keep these vital services running.
"Independence isn't about doing everything yourself; it's about having the choice and the tools to live the life you want."
