A Lifelong Dream, a New Challenge - The London Marathon 2025

Hi, I'm Darren, and on April 27th, 2025, I will finally take on a challenge I’ve dreamed about for as long as I can remember: running the London Marathon. I’ve entered the ballot for the last 7 years, always hoping this would be the year, but I never got a place—until now. And, I couldn’t be more excited (and a little nervous)!
I’ll be turning 53 just a couple of weeks before the marathon, which makes this milestone even more meaningful. My best friend, Paul Thorley, who has run the London Marathon the last few years for Wessex Cancer Support, invited me to take up a charity place. After spending a weekend together and hearing about his incredible experiences, I realised that this was my moment and possibly the last chance I would get to experience this incredible event. With Paul’s support in my training, I said yes—and I haven’t looked back since.
Although I’ve completed some tough challenges in the past, like the Yorkshire and National Three Peaks and several Tough Mudder races, I know this will be my biggest challenge yet. Running the London Marathon is not just about testing my limits, both physically and mentally, it’s also about raising money for a cause that needs as much help as possible.
I’m ready to give it my all, give up my favourite food and also the biggest challenge, give up the beer, so I’m so grateful for any support you can offer, whether it’s cheering me on or making a donation. Let’s do this together!
Running for Hope: Supporting Wessex Cancer Trust
This April, I will be taking on one of the biggest challenges of my life. It’s not just about crossing the finish line for me, it’s about making every step count towards a cause that’s incredibly close to all our hearts. Wessex Cancer Trust, is a charity that provides vital emotional and practical support to individuals and families affected by cancer.
Cancer is something that has touched so many of our lives in different ways, whether personally or through someone we love. The journey can feel overwhelming and isolating, but Wessex Cancer Trust is there to provide comfort, counselling, and care to people during their hardest moments. They believe that everyone deserves a helping hand, and I want to do my part to ensure they can continue to offer these life changing services.
Every donation, big or small, will go directly towards helping people face cancer with dignity and support. Together, we can help make sure no one has to face cancer alone.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity and support as I run this marathon, not just for myself, but for everyone whose life has been touched by cancer. Your contribution truly will make a difference.
