Story

Running for Hope: Supporting the Phoenix Unit in Sunderland

Three months ago, my world changed in a way I never saw coming. I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia — a life-long condition that, while treatable, has no cure. The news was overwhelming. Everything I thought I knew about my future suddenly shifted, and so did the rhythm of my everyday life.

Running has always been a huge part of who I am, but since August last year, persistent pain and countless hospital visits meant I had to hang up my running shoes. I had to cancel races I’d been looking forward to for months, including the Boston Marathon this April. That was a tough pill to swallow — physically and emotionally.

But I’m not ready to give up.

With treatment underway and a cautious optimism in my heart, I’ve finally been able to start training again. My first race back will be the Sunderland Strollers Pier to Pier in May — the beginning of a new chapter. From there, I’ll take on several more runs, building up to the New York City Marathon in November, one of the world’s most iconic races. And I’ll be doing it all to raise money for a place that’s now close to my heart — The Phoenix Unit in Sunderland.

The Phoenix Unit has been a lifeline — a place filled with compassion, expertise, and unwavering support. They help so many people like me every single day, and now I want to give something back.

Please, if you can, donate to support the Phoenix Unit. Your generosity will help fund vital care, comfort, and resources for patients living with cancers. Every step I run will be powered by your kindness — and by the strength of the people who’ve stood beside me through the toughest time of my life.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring. And thank you for helping me turn something hard into something hopeful.
