Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I will be Cycling from Lands end to John O'Groats starting from Lands End on 27/4/24. every penny raised will go to the 2 charities (this page & a linked page) & i am self funding the ride.

I will be doing the ride completely unsupported, that means i will have nobody with me, nobody with a car / motor home meeting me anywhere along the route etc. i will be hoping to complete this is about 2 weeks ish'.

I will be hoping to be doing 2 nights camping (yes i will be carrying a tent, sleeping gear & cooking gear) followed by a night in a hostel / B&B or the likes so that i can shower & charge power packs to keep my GPS, Phone & Lights bright!

I will (Phone signal depending) be putting updates on my Facebook page each day so as to show where i am / have been with some pics :-)

I am doing this in aid of 2 charities that are dear to me, this page is for the Lower Moss Wood Wildlife hospital that does a marvelous job taking in & caring for injured wildlife of all sorts, they have written a bio explaining their roots & what they do as below......

After working in engineering, Ray Jackson followed his passion for nature and began working at Lower Moss Wood Educational Nature Reserve in 1988, and was soon appointed Warden.

When someone brought two orphaned fox cubs to him 30 years ago, Ray left home and started living in a caravan on-site so he could care for them.

People then started bringing him sick and injured wildlife, and so Ray began operating a Wildlife Hospital. Since the hospital was founded, the number of wildlife casualties has increased, now totalling up to 3,000 animals each year!

With just 3 members of staff, Lower Moss Wood relies on a team of dedicated volunteers to help run the Wildlife Hospital.

Ray was awarded an MBE for services to animal welfare and to the community of 2006.

The charity also provides a place for schools, disabled visitors, environmental groups and many others to come and enjoy the countryside, learn about conservation and the environment and have a great day out. To date Ray has given more than 60,000 children and adults an inspirational insight into the great outdoors and our native wildlife! It is so important that we are able to continue doing this for future generations and so the charity now needs support more than ever…the pandemic hit our finances hard as schools were unable to attend and our bookings never fully returned to pre-pandemic numbers due increasing costs of coaches.

That combined with the ongoing cost of living crisis means that income/donations are decreasing, our overheads are increasing and to a charity that receives no Government or corporate funding – that is not a great combination!

During our busiest period in 2023, it cost approximately £15,000 per month fund the charity’s vital work in education and wildlife rehabilitation – it may well be more this year so please consider supporting this wonderful fundraising effort by a very special man!

Good luck Dave – we are behind you all the way (in spirit – not on a bike!) and appreciate your gargantuan effort!

A heartfelt thank you from all of the LMW team 🦊
