Story

Thanks for any help you can give. We are raising money for the British Heart Foundation. This is our BIGGEST CHALLENGE EVER ....1000 miles over 14 days.

My story (David) I was born in 1955 when there was no corrective operation for my condition 'Tetralogy of Fallot'. As I got older I could do less and less, even dressing was a struggle and I would get breathless. I could never take part in any activities at school.

I was one of the lucky ones ,with the help of research funds from the BHF and amazing doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital I was one of the early patients to have a 'Total Correction' operation back in 1967 when I was 11. It provided a magical new beginning for me, I could catch up and do things that before were impossible. I swam a mile within six weeks of my operation, I took up canoe slalom and as a teenager, got selected for the British team, and with a friend became the British C2 slalom champion’s two seasons running before it was an Olympic sport.

Over the years, my parents continued to support the BHF through their fundraising efforts and this legacy has continued through me, more recently by cycling with my good friend and bike buddy Julie. My rides have included London to Brighton, London 100 and one of the famous Tour De France climbs up Mt Ventoux.

My Story (Julie) I am excited to be sharing this challenging adventure with David, my cycling buddy and friend. I have previously supported the BHF cycling events throughout the years including London to Brighton 3 times and Oxford to Cambridge.

However, in 2010 their work became of greater importance to me. I had just completed the London Marathon and was feeling fit and on top of the world with my achievement but then a few months later I suddenly developed severe chest pains. I was taken to A&E and then blue lighted up to Hammersmith Hospital for an emergency angiogram. Luckily my arteries were whistle clean, but I was diagnosed with Pericarditis. It was certainly a very scary time but made me more determined to look after my heart health even more and to continue supporting BHF.

Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as us, and the continued research of the BHF helps others less fortunate than ourselves.

The Lands’ End to John O'Groats adventure will be our biggest cycle challenge yet so we hope we can raise more funds together for the BHF. Huge thanks for your support. David & Julie
