The Camino de Santiago Trail - 200 miles · 23 June 2025
Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
This June, David will be taking on one of the hardest routes of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Walking the first 200 miles of the route over hilly terrain, this northern trek is not for the seasonal walker. Gradients can be more than 1000m, with steep climbing across what is considered the toughest stretch of all the different Camino trails.
The chosen route of Camino del Norte, winds its way along the verdant north coast of Spain, starting in the border city of Irún before passing through Bilbao and Santander. The path is accentuated by dramatic coastal cliffs, rugged mountains and tiny fishing villages. The paths and mountain trails are technically challenging and will push the most accomplished of hikers.
David has been preparing for the hike by walking the Cornish coastal routes and has been joined in part by his grandchildren, Paddy and Ernie.
This year, David would like to walk the Camino de Santiago in memory of Paddy and Ernie's remarkable Mum, Poppy. The beloved second daughter of Bill and Bridget Roberts, Poppy grew up in Cornwall with sisters Amy and Annie. Poppy married Lee in 2011 and they became very proud parents to Paddy (now 12) and Ernie (now 10).
In January 2019, Poppy was tragically and prematurely taken from her family by secondary breast cancer. Following her death, Lee and the boys have continued to be supported by Penhaligon's Friends.
Penhaligon’s Friends is a Cornish charity supporting bereaved children, young people, parents, and carers. Helping hundreds of children by offering bereavement support, Penhaligon's Friends provide Memory Days, support groups and training for volunteers and professionals. They offer children the chance to meet others and share their experiences, as well as practical resources to help them cope with their grief. They rely entirely on the support of individuals, groups and businesses.
We would be so grateful if you could please sponsor David to complete 200 miles of the Camino del Norte in just 8 days, in memory of Poppy and raising invaluable funds for this incredible charity.
