Dementia UK Taking on Series of their Challenges in 2025

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses – who we continually support and develop – provide life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I first started doing runs for Dementia UK in 2018 with a little arm twisting from my sister Nicky to do the Manchester 10km. I hadn't regularly run before then. 2019 came the Manchester Half. 2020 London Marathon ( virtually thanks Covid) 2021 London Marathon. Since then there's been a series of Half Marathons including GNR Twice all inspired by my Mum who had Vascular Dementia and we lost in November 2019.

In the last 2 years I have become a Volunteer Ambassador for Dementia UK, supporting the fabulous team of Regional Fundraisers and getting to know more of the team at Dementia UK virtually and in person.

Every 3 Minutes someone will get a diagnosis of Dementia in the UK

An estimated 944 000 people in the UK are living with Dementia of which around 70 000 have young onset Dementia - ( under 65)

The average time to diagnosis is 4.4 years in younger people compared to 2.2 years for people aged over 65

In England in August 2018, the estimated dementia diagnosis rate for under 65s was 41%, compared to 68% for people aged over 65

Dementia affects families friends and loved ones which is why the support available from Admiral Nurses is so important and why Dementia UK is campaigning to have Dementia experts in all NHS Trusts

Dementia and Alzheimers disease continued to be the top leading cause of death in England and Wales in 2023, with 66,876 deaths registered (11.6% of all deaths).

One in 3 people born today will get a Dementia diagnosis in their lifetime!

Can people affected by dementia get the support they need at the moment?

In short, no. Despite dementia being the leading cause of death, there is no long-term integrated pathway of care for people living with the condition. For too long, disjointed health and care services have left people falling through the gaps in support. There is confusion about where to go for help and when, and all too often, services are failing to provide the specialist support that people living with dementia and their families need.

This is why the role of DEMENTIA UK is so important and any support you can give would be much appreciated

As part of this through 2025 I am taking on a series of Dementia UK Challenges and I hope that you may consider joining me in some. At the moment we have 7

In addition I am aiming to run/ walk 3650 km so just over 300 km a month & averaging 10 km a day

And with 36000 m of ascent ! That's approximately same climb as if doing uk 3 peaks each & every month. ( you can tell I don't live in Norfolk)

The walking will be done with Bella & about 2/3 of climbing ends up being on walks based on prior stats!
