Story

As part of Central Ops' positive impact project, "Connected Cycleways," we are aiming to cycle 656 miles to raise money for Life Cycle UK. This distance covers the route from Bristol to Land's End and back, following Route 3 of the national cycle network. Our goal is to complete this challenge in 10 days.

Life Cycle UK's projects reach out to excluded people and support them to live healthier, happier lives. Our “Two’s Company” scheme, for example, enlists sighted volunteers to enable blind people to enjoy joyful, liberating days out tandem cycling:

“I never thought I would be able to do this after I lost my sight. To feel the wind rushing past you, be out in the countryside, smell the flowers and trees as you go past. It’s a revelation” - Steve.

However we can only keep changing lives thanks to generous support like yours.

For every £50 we raise, we'll contribute to the volunteer costs of our weekly Refugee Bike Kitchen. A bike is transformational for refugees. Surviving on just £40 a week, asylum seekers are often isolated, with no way to travel to vital support. Through our refugee bike provision and maintenance drop-in, refugees and asylum seekers can learn to maintain a bike, ensuring they can attend English lessons, doctor's appointments, take children to school, and visit loved ones.

For every £290 we raise, we'll save a bike from landfill by funding its restoration through our prisoner rehabilitation project. By restoring each bike into a smooth, safe, and fun-to-ride bicycle, we'll prevent 246kg CO2e from being emitted while providing training opportunities and pathways to employment for some of the most vulnerable in society.

If we raise £5,352, we'll cover the annual cost of upkeep for our entire fleet of tandem bicycles. Used weekly, these tandems provide accessible cycling adventures for those who are visually impaired. These weekly rides are essential in offering accessible exercise, sensory experiences, and preventing isolation for those who face barriers to getting outside.
