Story
Hello. Thank you for visiting my RunReigate page, whether you have supported me before or you are doing so for the first time. Any support you can give is greatly appreciated.
East Surrey Samaritans is one of over 200 branches across the UK supporting callers day and night, many of whom are struggling to cope and may be suicidal. Our branch is independently funded and costs over £30,000 a year to run, so contributions are our lifeblood. We estimate that just £10 will help us take 8 calls, emails or Internet Messages that could change or save a life.
The RunReigate Half-Marathon is my local half, and one of my favourite races – I have completed most years, and was disappointed to have to miss it last year because of some knee problems. My knees seem to be back to a better state now so I am looking forward to being back in the event, though I don't know if I will get to meet Dame Kelly Holmes again as I did a few years ago.
East Surrey Samaritans is the local branch of the charity that I volunteer for. I have been a listening volunteer for about 9 years now, manning the phones to talk to those who are suicidal, in emotional difficulty, or just need someone to offload to. It is immensely rewarding and I would encourage anyone to take a volunteering role (at Samaritans, or elsewhere).
I have now raised money for East Surrey Samaritans on a number of occasions at RunReigate - it is always a very well organised event and the atmosphere there is terrific. I like that there are usually many people I know also running the race, including many that I know from Reigate Priory AC and from Reigate Priory Parkrun. While I am here, a quick plug for parkrun in general and Reigate Priory parkrun in particular … whether you are a walker, a runner or want to volunteer you will get a wonderfully warm welcome (once we are back, which should be soon). Look out for us in Priory Park, Reigate at 9am on Saturday mornings.
Thanks for visiting the page. And thanks for any contribution you are able to make.
