Story
I'm walking the TCS London Marathon with my stick once again in 2024 for #TeamBowelCancer. Currently only 40% of cases are diagnosed with bowel cancer at an early stage, and it is the second biggest cancer killer. The focus of Bowel Cancer UK over the next three years is to spread the message and to save many more lives. They are the UK's leading bowel cancer charity. They're determined to save lives as well as to improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.
£18 Could help to deliver two awareness talks, sharing information about the signs of cancer.
£24 Could provide an hour’s expert nurse support on the Ask The Nurse service.
£46 Could help support policy research to improve bowel screening.
£100 Could allow the researchers to do three hours of research focused on early diagnosis.
In my 50s and 60s I ran 13 marathons, including 4 in London. When a Virtual London Marathon was introduced in 2021 I took it on, even though I walk with my stick. After a finish in under 7.5 hours, I did it again in 2022, in 7:13:15. In 2023 I succeeded in the ballot for the actual event in London. On April 23rd two months after my 90th birthday I was in the start line for a memorable day as the oldest of 49,272 starters. I have been told that my time of 7:16:46 was the fastest 90+ finish recorded In London. I can’t wait to be in that unequalled event again this year.
