Some three years ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This came about because I was urged by a very good friend of mine, Jerry Adler, who I have known for over fifty years, after we met at college in Ealing. Jerry himself was diagnosed with prostate cancer and is receiving ongoing treatment. Initially I was under regular surveillance but, as my condition worsened, I was told that action needed to be taken. I chose to have my prostate surgically removed, and the operation took place in August 2025.
As a keen runner, my first thought after my recovery, was to run a half marathon in order to raise funds so that more research can be done to try to improve the treatment for this condition, which affects so many men. One in eight men in the UK get prostate cancer, and nearly 12,000 men die of it every year.
As a self-confessed "cricket tragic" (see my profile photo with Lancashire and England opener, Keaton Jennings) my next thought was to raise funds for the Bob Willis Fund. Bob was a cricket legend and Ashes hero. I saw him bowl for England on many occasions. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer but, unfortunately, did not receive the necessary treatment in time and his cancer spread, resulting in his untimely passing at far too young an age for a man who kept himself fit and active.
The Bob Willis Fund was therefore set up in his name by his wife, Lauren, and daughter, Katie, and to date it has raised over two million pounds to help conduct research into the condition and, just as importantly, to promote awareness of the condition, and to try to get a national screening programme.
I am so glad that I have chosen to raise funds for this wonderful charity. The help and support which I have received from Katie and her colleagues has spurred me on with my running and training for this upcoming event, and I hope to reward them accordingly by raising a decent total.
I will be very grateful for any contribution you feel able to make in support of this wonderful cause
Thank you.
Dave
