Brighton Half & Marathon for Grassroots Suicide Prevention

David Rainford is raising money for Grassroots Suicide Prevention

Brighton Marathon 2026 · 12 April 2026 · Start fundraising for this event

We work to make sure nobody has to experience thoughts of suicide alone. We fight dangerous stigma that stops people talking about suicide. We teach communities to recognise and support those at risk. We develop new ways for people to get lifesaving support. Together, we can prevent suicide.

Story

I'm running the Brighton Half Marathon and Brighton Marathon in 2026, and raising money for Grassroots Suicide Prevention.

I have always hated running, and avoided it wherever possible. But I started running in the first lockdown, as a reason to get out the house. I started with a couch to 5k plan, and after that decided to set my sights a bit higher, signing up for the 2021 Brighton Marathon.

I lost a close friend to suicide while I was training, so decided to run in memory of him and raise some money for a good cause.

Since then, I've become more closely involved with Grassroots Suicide Prevention, completing their Real Talk training and becoming a trustee in 2023. I've also taken part in a few more fundraising challenges

I've let the running fall by the wayside in the last year, and have decided to challenge myself to get back to the level I was at nearly five years ago, and hopefully raise a little more money for a good cause.

Grassroots Suicide Prevention

When someone has thoughts of suicide, connecting with others can make all the difference. But reaching out can feel impossible. So many people go through this pain alone.

That’s why preventing suicide means working together. Together, we can fight dangerous stigma that stops people talking about suicide. Together, we can learn to recognise and support those at risk, and connect them with a network of lifesaving services. Together, we can prevent suicide.

Grassroots works to make sure nobody has to go through thoughts of suicide alone.
