For the first time, a team of PCR's top supporters are taking on the challenge of a lifetime, the Freedom Trail Trek, in a bid to raise £100,000 in the fight for a world free from the impact of the prostate cancer, for every family.

Story

In September 2025, I'll be joining a team of PCR's ambassador supporters to take on the challenge of a lifetime, the Freedom Trail Trek or Le Chemin de Liberté.

It's personal to me - I am a survivor of Prostate Cancer. My two older brothers have also endured it. I was particularly lucky that it was diagnosed and caught early. At the time, the company I worked for offered all employees over the age of 45, free annual checkups with BUPA. I had been suffering from frequent urination problems for a number of years - I had given up watching movies on the BBC, but at times I even had to get up between the ad-breaks on ITV! So when I mentioned this to the doctor at BUPA he said that although he couldn't see anything particularly wrong, he would write to my GP and that I should insist on a referral to a urologist. So, at the age of just 47, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I had it removed by robotic laparoscopic surgery in April 2005 at St Mary's, Paddington. So 2025 will represent 20 years post-op. I am so lucky, when you compare my story with that of Sir Chris Hoy, a similar age to me at the time of diagnosis. This shows how important early diagnosis can be, and why we should stress to all our menfolk how important it is to get tested.

The trek will also coincide with my 68th birthday! Day 1 of the actual trek. (Hopefully it will not coincide with my dropping down dead from exhaustion!)

I'll be training all year to prepare for this challenge, following the footsteps of Allied soldiers and Jewish refugees on one of the iconic mountain routes they took through the Pyrenees to escape Nazi occupied France during WWII.

Together, we are aiming to raise more than £100,000 for Prostate Cancer Research's lifesaving work, funding innovative research to find the treatments of the future and ensure no family is impacted by this devastating disease.

You can support me by making a donation to this page, and thank you so much for your generosity.
