Pier to Peer: Running for Suicide Awareness
We provide a helpline, and webchat service to help prevent suicide in the UK

Story

Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives. And 75% of all UK suicides are male. CALM exists to change this by offering life saving services, provoking conversation and bringing people together to reject living miserably.

From advice on our site, through to free, confidential chats with our helpline staff, online or on the phone, we’re here for whoever needs us, every day. No matter what.

£8 is enough to fund one potentially life-saving call.

£24 can provide support materials for a family who have lost someone to suicide

£109 can equip a volunteer

£440 can train a professional helpline worker to speak to people who are struggling

After meeting the initial target of £1,000, I've set my sights on £1500 so that is 187 potentially lifesaving calls.

December is a bleak month. 125 people commit suicide each week in the UK. That's around 18 each and every day. 13.5 of these are men. In December I aim to run at least 13.5 miles each day. I plan to mainly run laps of Worthing Pier, so around 34 laps each day, every day.

People are welcome to join me, to either bring along a mince pie, run with me or have a conversation.

Event logistics:

// You can view when I plan to run using this Google Cal

// The main route is this 0.4mile loop of Worthing Pier

// The alternate route, if the Pier is closed due to bad weather, is this 0.5 loop along Worthing's Prom. Sometimes the end of the Pier is closed, in which case the Pier laps will be shorter.

// In the unlikely event that weather conditions are too dangerous to be on the seafront, laps of Victoria Park will be run

As an Attain. runcap ambassador and member of the #attainruncrew , they kept me here. Kept me busy living through some bleak and dark times in 2023. Running is my therapy, talking is my saviour. I hope that this challenge will not only raise finds for CALM, but also get people talking and connecting.

Although I'm an ultra marathon runner, I will probably be crawling rather than running by the middle of the month!

Keep busy living.
