Story
This year (health permitting!) we’re attempting the D33 Ultra — 33 miles from Aberdeen to Banchory and back.
Simple concept: run there… then run back.
I’ll be pushing Davy in our assisted running wheelchair as he aims to complete his first ultra marathon — a dream he’s had ever since we got the chariot. I may have suggested it flippantly once… he took it very seriously 😅
Due to Covid, coma, Davy suffered multiple strokes (brain infarcts), which significantly affected his mobility, stamina and cognitive function. He has since been diagnosed with vascular dementia as a result of that brain injury. He spent 13 months hospitalised due to Covid and was the worst case in Mexico (where he was working at the time) that survived. He’s no longer physically able to run, in fact use any limb, himself, which is why he’s in a running wheelchair.
The chair allows him to take part safely, to experience race day, the atmosphere, the camaraderie — and still feel the speed and the wind in his “hair” (which is particularly impressive considering he’s bald 😄). He may not be able to power the miles with his legs anymore, but his spirit is very much still in the race. We just move a little differently now — and that’s absolutely fine.
Last year we had to pull out due to a chest infection. This year we go again — supported by an incredible relay team of friends running alongside us, helping on the hills, keeping spirits high, and politely turning their backs when I need a strategic bush stop!
We’re raising funds for The Oxygen Works — an amazing charity that doesn’t treat people like “clients”, but like family. The support they provide genuinely changes lives.
We’re doing 33 miles — if we could raise £10 per mile, that would be incredible. Every pound makes a difference.
If you can donate, thank you.
If you can share, thank you.
If you can cheer us on, we’ll take that too.
Let’s make every mile count ❤️
