One Step at a Time: Dawn’s Vision Challenge

Yorkshire Three Peaks · 3 May 2025
This May Bank Holiday, I’m taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge—a 24-mile trek across Ingleborough, Pen y Ghent, and Whernside. But for me, this is more than just a hike.
I have Stargardt’s Disease, a rare genetic condition that is slowly taking away my central vision. Losing sight changes everything—how you move, how you connect with the world, and how you navigate even the simplest of tasks. But it won’t stop me from taking on this challenge.
For someone with a visual impairment, steep ascents, rocky paths, and unpredictable weather make this an even greater test of resilience. That’s why I’m splitting the trek over two days, tackling it alongside my yoga community and my husband—step by step, one peak at a time.
Macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, with around 300 people diagnosed every day. It doesn’t just steal your sight—it takes your confidence and independence too. It affects people of all ages, even children, yet we still don’t fully understand why, and there is no cure.
The Macular Society was there for me when I was first diagnosed, offering guidance, emotional support, and a community of people who truly understand. Now, I want to give something back.
The only way to Beat Macular Disease is to fund more research—until we find a cure or treatments that stop it in its tracks. The Macular Society is leading the way, but they need our help. Your donation will help to:
💛 Fund vital research into better treatments and a cure.
📞 Provide specialist support and helpline services for those newly diagnosed.
💬 Offer counselling, peer support, and befriending services to help people adjust to sight loss.
👁 Train people in techniques like eccentric viewing to help them make the most of their remaining vision.
This is a bucket list challenge, and I’m determined to reach the finish line. But I can’t do it without your support.
Every step I take will be for everyone facing sight loss, and every donation will help ensure that they have the support they need.
🙏 Please donate if you can, and share this page to help spread the word. Your generosity means the world—thank you for being part of this journey with me.
