Story

It's that time of year again. FUNDRAISING TIME!

Every year I try to undertake a physical challenge to raise money and awareness of a specific charity. These have included Rotherham Hospice, Bone cancer, Dementia, Pancreatic cancer and MIND to name a few.

I've pushed myself to the limit in recent years by swimming the accumulative distance of the channel in 30 days, running a 10k, completing Total Warrior obstacle course, doing 100 Burpees a day for a month and running 4km every 4 hours for two days straight.

This year I take on my biggest challenge to date as I attempt to combine distance with one of my old adversaries, the burpee.

On July 9th I will be attempting to complete 5km of Burpees in what promises to be the toughest one yet. For the first time I am doubting whether this can be done but I am going to give it all I have to make sure I get as much money raised for such a great charity.

I chose Diabetes UK as this years charity after a conversation with Jordan Thomas back at Christmas when he explained how his son Morgan had Type 1 Diabetes and listed some of the daily battles he and partner Laura face.

This really resonated with me as a parent and made me realise just how much we take our children's health for granted. Here I am moaning about Rupert and Ralph not listening to me or misbehaving when there are people, like Laura and Jord, who can't even choose a meal for their son without extreme caution.

Everything becomes a military operation for them. I asked for a few words from them to help underline just how hard it can be dealing with Diabetes and the following message really does put things into perspective.

Please read in full.

"Our son Morgan was diagnosed at just 20 months old. He’s now 2 and a half, 1 year into his diagnosis and the day to day struggles are still as hard. Here are just a few...

One of the hardest things about this disease is that there is no break, it’s constant day and night.

Every day before Morgan eats any thing we have to check his blood glucose levels, work out how many carbs are in what he’s about to eat, then give him the correct amount of insulin to cover the carbs, then Morgan has to wait 15 mins before he eats, with Morgan only being 2 this is very difficult he can get so frustrated as he doesn’t fully understand.

Every time Morgan’s poorly, it affects him much more than any other child because of his diabetes. His body starts to produce ketones sometimes this is manageable at home but a lot of the time ends with him being admitted to hospital, so it’s a constant worry for us as parents.

You want him to live a normal life but you are so scared that he’s going to get poorly so you try to protect him from catching anything but you still have to let him be a child.

Morgan can't just be left with anyone either unless they have had proper training in diabetes and understand what to do and how to treat him, this is one of the reasons why I had to leave my job of 11 years when Morgan was diagnosed as there was no one to care for him when me and his dad were both at work.

Being diabetic, Morgans blood sugar has to be managed but if he was to fall into a severe hypo he could become unconscious and you have to no what to do in this case.

Morgan has a dexcom to try help keep his blood sugar in range this is a transmitter which is attached to him which gives us a reading, if Morgan goes high or low this alarms for us to act.

As it is technology there are days where it doesn’t work like it should, which makes everything even harder. Each day we have to make sure it’s working correctly.

People don’t realise what affects your blood sugar for example, the weather, if your active, what you eat, your every day to day things all affect it which makes it very hard to manage.

Despite these daily battles our little boy is the happiest boy and he’s come such a long way since being diagnosis, he’s a little warrior!"

Jordan and Laura are inspirations to us all as parents and they aren't alone in their struggles with Diabetes. Let's help raise awareness and buckets of cash to help them and other people tackling these very same troubles.

Every little helps, whether it's a fiver or a tenner. Please give what you can and help this great charity.
