Leeds Ironman - Full Distance · 27 July 2025

Eva’s Angels is a charity lovingly dedicated to our beautiful five year old daughter Eva Giles who lost her battle to Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) a rare childhood brainstem tumour, in April 2017. Eva’s Angels provides short breaks in a caravan in Whitstable, Kent, to families who are affected by childhood cancer. Families can enjoy a short holiday by the sea to escape daily life, and hospital appointments. We will also target promising brain tumour research projects to fund as we grow.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Every couple of years I try to find a suitable event to raise money for Eva's Angels charity. I like to select events that scare me and seem impossible at first glance. In 2019 I ran 65 miles from St Georges Hospital in London to our home in Herne Bay - the final journey Eva made before we lost her - we raised £16,000. In 2023 I ran 50 miles from Folkstone to Herne Bay, and ran Snowdonia Ultra 50 miler - raising £6000.

This July I will be competing in Leeds Ironman which is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run. Yep, I'm scared.

Eva's Angels was founded by my wife Emma and I in 2018 following the devastating news that our daughter had a terminal brain tumour called DIPG. It's a "rare" brain tumour that affects thirty primary school aged children a year in the UK. Survival rate is zero. Eva fought for a year and passed away in April 2017. Something I will never be able to understand.

During the year Eva was unwell, she went through many different types of treatment which meant we spent time in hospitals and clinics. We were offered free respite holidays through two amazing amazing charities called Make a Wish, and then later through Taylor Made Dreams. In retrospect, these two gifts were profoundly important. They took us away from the hospital visits and gave us time to just be a family. I look back and appreciate the time we had and the memories we made. Something that can never be taken from me.

It felt right for Emma and I to create a charity in Eva's name that gives other families the same opportunity. We bought a Caravan on the Kent Coast in Whitstable where we offer respite holidays to families affected by a childhood cancer diagnosis, or bereavement. The charity also raises money for much needed research into childhood and young adults brain cancer.

To date we have given holidays to over a hundred families, and are now working with two hospitals and two children’s hospices. The charity remains busy with bookings this year, and with raising costs of ground rent and caravan maintenance, fundraising is more critical than ever.
