The Norfolk Marathon 2024 · 28 April 2024 ·

Raising awareness of primary bone cancer and much needed funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

Story

I have met some amazing people who have become my friends through the running community.

But sometimes you meet people who are an true inspiration to all those who don’t even run.

I met Sally at a race and it was she who inspired me so much that I decided to run the Norfolk Marathon for her dedicated charity Bone Cancer Trust Foundation. This is Sallys story …

In August 2022 Sally was diagnosed with Chondrosarcoma - a type of bone cancer.

Primary bone cancer is a rare type of cancer. Each year only 500 people are diagnosed.

Up until her diagnosis Sally was an avid runner - always training for something with her biggest achievement being completing a 50k Ultramarathon.

During these runs Sally noticed her leg was starting to 'niggle’. It had been for a while. Sally put the pain down to all the running.

The chronic pain wasn't easing. It was starting to affect her daily life. Sally sought help with physio, private osteopathy, sports massage and acupuncture. She literally tried everything to stop the pain

Sally finally bit the bullet and went to her GP. Thankfully she listened to her symptoms and sent Sally for an X-ray. A MRI, CT scan and biopsy followed.

Limb salvage surgery is the only treatment for most bone cancer patients.

Sally has undergone two major leg surgeries to remove a 20cm tumour from her thigh. Her femur has been replaced with a titanium custom built prosthesis.

Recovery is a long slow process. Sally still has problems with her knee which seized up between surgeries. Sadly Sally will never run again but she won’t let this deter her.

I am helping Sally to raise money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. They are the leading charity dedicated to this disease. They fund ground-breaking research, life-saving awareness initiatives and provide information and support to patients. All without any government funding. They rely 100% on people like you supporting their work through donations.

So you lovely people please dig deep, big or small all donations are most welcome.
