As a mam, there are moments in life that you never imagine you will have to face. For me and my family, August 30th 2025 was one of those moments - when Owen, my son, was involved in a horrible head on motorcycle accident that changed his life forever.

The accident was fatal and would have stayed that way had it not been for the emergency services, including the police, ambulance and members of the public. He suffered devastating injuries, including a brachial plexus injury leaving his left arm permanently paralysed, a paralysed lung, a collapsed lung, visual impairments, a grade 2 brain injury, 10 fractured spinal vertebrae, two broken shoulders and several traumatic abdominal lacerations.

But, despite everything that followed there is one thing I will always be incredibly grateful for - Wales Air Ambulance.

When collecting his twin sister, Carys from work at police HQ, I was given the news that Owen was fatally injured - every mother’s worst nightmare. There was nothing but silence. Incredibly, an update came through that Wales Air Ambulance were on scene and had managed to stabilise and intubate Owen at the roadside, but he was still extremely critical and needed specialist care at UHW’s Trauma and Intensive Care Unit.

Wales Air Ambulance responded so quickly and brought specialist, emergency care to a 21 year old young man laying lifeless in the road. I truly believe that without this rapid and expert care, Owen would not be here today.

They didn’t just save a life that day - they saved a son, a twin brother, a baby brother, uncle, nephew, grandson and amazing friend. They gave us something no amount of money could ever buy - time. His life has changed forever and faces significant challenges daily.

Still, I am extremely thankful that I still have my wonderful son. I have decided to set myself a goal of raising £1000 for Wales Air Ambulance as a small way of saying thank you, and to support this service in delivering expert care to other families in their time of need.
