Story
George Derek “Degsie” Shirley
George Derek Shirley, affectionately known to everyone, including his grandchildren, as “Degsie”, sadly passed away on 24th May 2026.
A true local character and the much-loved “celebrity of Hartford”, Degsie was woven into the fabric of Cheshire life. As Publican of The Coachman for almost two decades until the early 1990s, his extravert personality, infectious smile, and generosity made him an extremely popular and successful landlord. During those years, he was at the heart of countless charitable events, bringing the community together.
He will be great missed by his family and friends. In the last few years Derek suffered from vascular dementia. Dementia is the cruellest of diseases, please help support vital research to find a cure by donating to Dementia UK.
We are grateful for any and all donations thank you.
