Story
On September 7th 2024 I will be taking part in the Ride Across Britain to raise funds for Cancer Research. The ride is sponsored by the cloud service provider Babble and organised and run by the fantastic team at Threshold Sports. The event starts from Lands’ End on Saturday 7th September 2024 and takes in 969 miles of cliff tops, moorlands, hidden roads and soaring mountains across 23 Counties of England, Wales and Scotland.
The ride takes 9 days and by the time I reach John O'Groats on Sunday 15th September I would have cycled twice the height of Everest, averaged over 100 miles a day, burnt over 50,000 calories, been eaten alive by midges in the Highlands and no doubt got through numerous tubs of chamois creme!
The ride is fully supported and each night hundreds of cyclists will be eating, recovering and spending the night under canvas preparing to do it all again the next day and cycling from the following base camps:
Day 1 - Lands’ End to Okehampton 105 miles
Day 2 - Okehampton to Bath 110 miles
Day 3 - Bath to Ludlow 101 miles
Day 4 - Ludlow to Haydock 107 miles
Day 5 - Haydock to Carlisle 116 miles
Day 6 - Carlisle to Hopetoun Estate 106 miles
Day 7 - Hopetoun Estate to Strathdon 112 miles
Day 8 - Strathdon to Kyle of Sutherland 119 miles
Day 9 - Kyle of Sutherland to John O’Groats 104 miles
As you can see my cycle challenge will not be easy, it requires physical, mental and financial commitment but this does not compare to challenge endured by so many families, (my own included) and friends whom have sadly lost their fight, are currently battling cancer or have successfully beaten this terrible and cruel disease.
Cancer Research UK is the World’s largest independent Cancer Research Charity and its aim is to reduce the number of deaths from Cancer. It conducts research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Research activities are carried out in institutes, universities and hospitals across the UK, both by the charity's own employees and by its grant-funded researchers. It also provides information about cancer and runs campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the disease and influencing public policy.
