Story
As well as the physical side of judo, we also have our moral code and values.
As part of this aspect of our sport, Destination Judo is supporting the International Judo Federation’s Climate Challenge. We started by recycling our belts. Our sponsored throw then raised funds to help the Woodland Trust reforest areas of Scotland, and we’ve done litter picks round some of our clubs.
Our next mission is to help an endangered species – the Puffin!
The UK has around 10% of the worldwide puffin population and Scotland has 85% of them. They live in a small number of sites – including the Firth of Forth. However, as climate change warms our waters, these tough little birds are struggling to find the food they need to feed their chicks. If this continues unchecked we could lose 90% of our puffin population by 2050.
The RSPB is doing what it can to tackle this by mapping where puffins forage for fish, building a case for a ban on sandeel fishing and establishing marine protection zones’. They need support and we’d like to help them.
To do that, our children are doing a sponsored dash in class w/c 11th-16th September. Judokas will put on a judo jacket, sprint 10m to the finish line, take the jacket off. Sprint back to the start – and do it again. How many jackets can they get to the finish line in 1 minute (under 8s) and 1 ½ minutes (8+).
You can sponsor them by 'jacket' or give a one-off donation. All monies raised will go to the RSPB.
Thank you.
