Story

Melissa's Story: 1,000m for every year I have lived

On 14th June 2026 I will be walking 10k at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, to raise money for scoliosis. On that day at the same time, communities across the UK will come together for volunteer-led walks in local parks and coffee shop hubs.

It is not a race, but it is about taking part or just showing up and expressing a powerful message. By taking part, you raise awareness of scoliosis; you build local connections; you show support for people living with scoliosis; and you create a national moment of visibility.

Scoliosis is important to me because my mum at 12 years old got diagnosed with scoliosis after she fell off a ski lift, and my sister at the age of 7 got diagnosed and then braced. Myself, I have got a minor curve that we are keeping an eye on (my next appointment is on 22nd June).

I would appreciate a donation however big or small to support this cause to help people that have been affected by scoliosis. This donation could help someone catch their scoliosis early so that something can be done about it before it gets too late.

For example, my sister - her curve was quite bad but with the brace it has helped her spine get better and now she only has to wear it in the night this summer. In a few months they will x-ray her again to see how she’s getting on.

If you are sitting here reading this and don’t know what scoliosis is, then let me just explain it for you. Scoliosis is when you have a curve in your spine that when you catch late can get worse, a bit painful and you may need a major operation. If you catch it early and if the curve is around 20degrees it is likely you will get braced (to help you).

I’m walking with my mum, my dad and a good friend who is supporting this cause (you know who you are). I would appreciate anything you have to spare for this fantastic cause.

With love

Melissa ❤️
