Across DHU we have been sharing stories and speaking with our colleagues about their very personal experiences outside of work.

We recently spoke to Sue Kendrick in Oldbury who told us her heartbreaking, yet inspirational story which has led her to raise awareness of this rare condition.

Sue’s son, Jamie, was born with a rare, genetic condition known as Friedrich’s Ataxia, a degenerative disease that attacks the muscles from the feet up. Jamie sadly died 17 years ago at the age of 21 but his attitude to this condition made Sue stronger and changed her approach to life.

Sue told us: “I’m now raising money for Ataxia UK whenever I can, who help raise awareness of the condition, help fund research for treatment and support people who have it and their families. We’ve had auctions, my niece has done a parachute jump and I always donate on the anniversary of his death. It’s such a worthy cause and helps families and individuals just like us and Jamie through the difficult times so that we can enjoy what we have together.”
