Diane's fundraiser for En-Fold Autism support

Diane Johnson is raising money for En-Fold Autism support

Wing Walk · 19 October 2024

We want to ensure that all children, via support to their parents, can access the best services, information and support for them. We also want to ensure all individuals receiving a diagnosis in adulthood, find the right information and support. Our Autism support service provides between 4 and 6 sessions of individually tailored support, exploring what autism is, how to navigate the system, help with benefit applications, and signposting to relevant services. We also have adult social support groups providing safe places across the county for people to meet, reducing isolation and increasing wellbeing. Our parent support group, with family activities offers a safe space for families to come together and realise they are not alone. Activities include days trips such as the zoo, farm, Cadbury's world, space centre etc as well as active activities like water sports, cycling etc. We want to increase our capacity to keep up with the demand for our services. We want to reduce our waiting list to be able to support more families and individuals when they need it most.

Story

En-Fold was born from my passion and drive to be part of a change that sees Autistic people and their families getting the support and information that they need. All too often, once a diagnosis is given minimal explanation is offered, or information on what support is available. This system-navigating and setting people up equipped for their life journey is En-Fold’s mission, and something I am proud to be taking forward.

My diagnosis has given me an explanation of who I am and why I am the way I am. It is not an excuse, but it gives me a reason for the things I find so difficult, and therefore permission not to beat myself up (so much). Many people will look at me, and see a confident, intelligent and organised individual – certainly in the ‘you don’t look autistic’ group, Grrrr. Only those who know me well will see the critical, self-reflecting perfectionist.

Within my ‘professional’ mode, I am articulate and capable, and yet the challenge and anxiety experienced around the unfamiliar, unstructured or emotive can be debilitating. Every activity is planned and simple changes are hard to deal with.

I consider myself fortunate that my ‘special interest’ is autism. Through En-Fold, I am able to use my knowledge and passion to support other people, increase awareness and hopefully make the world a better place for autistic people.
