On 5th Sept 2025, I will be taking on the challenge of the world’s fastest zip line, at Penryn Quarry, Wales, in memory of my beautiful niece, Ellie Mawdsley.

Ellie was diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) in Dec 2021. She passed away in July 2023 aged just 23yrs.

I am doing this because at the celebration of Ellie’s life, the words spoken by the celebrant, deeply touched me, as he encouraged us all to try to make the world a better place by being ‘ a bit more Ellie Mawdsley’

In February 2015, aged just 15, Ellie did this exact same challenge, when she raised funds for Willowbrook Hospice, St. Helens, as part of her DofE charitable work.

I remember Ellie showing me the clip of her soaring across the quarry at speeds of up to 100mph and I was blown away by her courage and determination to raise funds for such a worthy cause.

As I exclaimed my amazement at what she’d achieved, Ellie insisted that I should do it ‘one day’ and in answer to my fears and concerns, she assured me that she’d do it again even offering to be my support!

Sadly we didn’t get to do this together and so…

In the spirit of me trying to be a ‘bit more Ellie Mawdsley’ I’ll be taking on this challenge to raise funds for The Ellie Mawdsley Foundation which aims to help find a cure for DIPG as well as support those families who are facing the same diagnosis.

Ellie was so very special and I am honoured to do this in her memory.
